Majority of the site is covered with diverse communities of 9130 Asperulo-Fagetum beech forests and 91H0* Pannonian woods with Quercus pubescens. Geological basement is formed by carbonate rocks predominate of which are limestone and dolomite. These sporadically protrude the surface to form exposed rocky outcrops. Due to the basement, substrates are typical for a high content of skeletic particles. The site encompasses an exceptionally high number of underground cavities, abysses and caves (8310 Caves not open to public) and harbours several species of international importance (Thlaspi caerulescens subsp. tatrense, Meles meles, Sciurus vulgaris, several species of bats) as well as a whole group of endemic species (Aconitum moldavicum, Alyssum montanum subsp. brymii, Campanula xylocarpa, Dianthus praecox subsp. pseudopraecox, Draba lasiocarpa subsp. klasterskyi, Primula auricula subsp. hungarica) and nationally protected species (Epipactis helleborine, Stipa pulcherrima, etc).

The site is situated in the Slovenský kras NP / Slovak Karst NP holding at the same time the status of the UNESCO - MAB Biosphere Reserve. It also falls within the territory of the Important Bird Area (IBA) Slovenský kras and pending Slovenský kras SPA. The site provides valuable nesting grounds for a number of bird populations of European importance, such as Ficedula albicollis, Ficedula parva, Dendrocopos medius, Dryocopus martius and Picus canus. The group of bird species of national importance encompasses, among others, taxa Columba palumbus, Strix aluco, Phylloscopus sibilatrix and Certhia familaris. The site is noted for plethora of underground karstic features of outstanding natural beauty (caves, abysses) that have under the name "Caves of Aggtelek and Slovak Karst" been inscribed into the UNESCO World Heritage List (cross border site with Hungary). These underground phenomena are noted as valuable wintering grounds for several species of bats. The site is noted for the occurrence of native communities of thermophilous mixed oakwoods. The site has been subject to continuous protection since 1925 when it was designated a national nature reserve.

Implementation of the non-sensitive methods of forest management might present threat to forest communities of the area. General "welfare" of habitats is also severely compromised by erosion processes of considerable scale. Illegal disposal of waste together with unauthorised sporting activities also substantially contribute to the vulnerability of local ecological communities.
