Popis územia
The site supports the extensive tracts of forests embellished by numerous rock faces and scree fields. Basement consists of the andesite rocks of various type representing the remnants of lava flow which in the area around Kopa Hill (922m altitude) has been exposed to form one of the most prominent landscape features of the area - impressive rock face of various degree of jointing with initial stages of rock labyrinth formation. The site is dominated by Leptosols. Cambisols are also partially present.
Ciele ochrany
The site is situated within the Protected Landscape Area - Biosphere Reserve Poľana and it also falls to the territory of the proposed Poľana SPA. Part of the site with prominent natural features has been under the protection of Slovak law in the category of nature reserve. Kopa site consists of the communities of the habitat types 9130 Asperulo-Fagetum beech forests and 91E0* Mixed ash-alder alluvial forests of temperate and Boreal Europe (Alno-Padion, Alnion incanae, Salicion albae). These communities provide for sporadic presence of all major species of Slovak large carnivores (brown bear Ursus arctos, gray wolf Canis lupus and European lynx Lynx lynx).
Zraniteľnosť
The implementation of the non-sensitive forest management practices can lead to undesirable changes in the status of local forest communities and their biological diversity. Artificial regeneration likewise is regarded as a factor contributing to the profound changes in the forest community characteristics (perhaps most important is the change in the degree of naturalness).
