The site lies between the villages Demjata and Veľký Slivník. It is situated at the boundary line of 2 geomorphological subunits: Beskydské predhorie and Ondavská vrchovina. Paleogene and Mesozoic sediments of the klippen belt build the site. Area has a character of a hilly land. Selective erosion and denudation processes created striking morphological elevations that consist of marlites and limestones of the Late Cretaceous period. The site consists of 5 hills with well-preserved xerophilous vegetation and it is surrounded with urban and agriculturally intensively used landscape, where grasslands alternate with the arable land and woods. Occurrence of nationally important plant species has been recorded in the site, e.g.: Thalictrum simplex subsp. galioides, Aster amelloides. Another plant species, Linum tenuifolium, which does not belong to nationally important species, is very rare in the whole region of Prešov.

The site is an example of the xerophile plant communities on calcareous substrates (Semi-natural dry grasslands and scrubland facies on calcareous substrates). Occurrence of Echium russicum is remarkable, because the northernmost locality of the species in Slovakia has been recorded on the site. Occurrence of Pulsatilla grandis also represents the northernmost known locality of the species in Slovakia. Since 1992 the site has been included into the network of protected areas of Slovakia as the Nature Reserve Demjatské kopce.

The site is situated in the intensively used agricultural land. Traditional use of the site - sheep grazing, has been preserved only at 3 small hills on the right side of the road from the village Demjata to the village Veľký Slivník, the other 2 hills (on left side of the road) remain without any use. Persistent interest in limestone extraction is a potential threat for the site.
