The site represents well-preserved stretch of the foothill stream and an outstanding example of stream ecosystem with well-developed morphologic features (meanders, side channels), riparian vegetation and alluvial wetlands providing favourable living conditions and breeding grounds for a range of rare and endangered species of animals, such as river otter Lutra lutra. For the species named the site represents the core area of its distribution within the Turiec River catchment basin. The site is also noted for the occurrence of several rare and endangered species of plants. Stream in this stretch changes its character from a typical torrent to a foothill type of watercourse. Basement is built by fluvial sediments such as sandy alluvial loams, alluvial gravels and alluvial sands. These sediments also contain fractions of rocks coming from the basement of adjacent mountain ranges, such as Miocene rocks of Flochová formation, grey marly limestones and marlstones of Krížna Nappe and limestones and dolomites of Triassic period.

The site is highly valued for its biological, ecological and landscape properties. In 1998, the part of the site was included in the Mokrade Turca / Turiec Wetlands Ramsar Site. The site is designated a protected site within the national network of protected areas.

Part of the site is situated in the vicinity of a busy thoroughfare linking Martin a Banská Bystrica. Not only traffic but also its maintenance might result, provided done incorrectly, in the pollution of important water resources (drinking water) situated in the area. Preservation of current water quality and hydrological regime is a prerequisite for the survival of the existing range of valuable habitats and species present on the site.
