Majority of the site is covered with forest stands and steppe type forest communities of the Tri Peniažky-Skalka mountain range situated southeast of the Jelšava town. From the geological point of view, the site represents the continuation of the Slovenský kras / Slovak Karst area. Conservation efforts on the site focus on the protection of valuable xero-thermophilous communities of 91H0* Pannonian woods with Quercus pubescens and Quercus virgiliana, 6210 Semi-natural dry grasslands and scrubland facies on calcareous substrates (Festuco-Brometalia) and 40A0* Continental deciduous thickets.

The site is situated on the northern limit of the thermophilous submediterranean oak woods range and represents an excellent example of the aforementioned type of forest that have survived in their natural structure and, better still, foster a whole number of typical flora and fauna species. The site is especially valuable for a high presence of nationally important plant species such as Iris pumila and Asyneuma canescens. The site has been declared a core zone of regional importance within the national network of the Territorial System of Ecological Stability.

Character of local habitats is threatened by human impact rather difficult to eliminate, such as illegal feeling of trees and stealing of dead wood, both of which local population is made responsible for and the collection of the forest products, e.g. berries of cornelian cherry Cornus mas. Air pollution caused by local industrial production of magnesite results in profound changes of soil properties (pH shifting to the alkaline end of pH scale) and dust burden.
