Ligularia sibirica

The site is situated on the right side of the Lipovecký potok (Lipovecký brook) between villages of Lipovce and Šindliar. Quarternary fluvial deposits occur in the floodplain of Lipovecký potok. Composition of the deposits represents the geomorphological subunits Branisko and Bachureň (direct vicinity of the site). The site lies on the tectonic contact of the Branisko Mt. with the surrounding Paleogene formations, where the important mineral waters sources reach the surface. The site represents the remnants of various wetland plant communities, which are surrounded with small strips of the arable land, mesophilous grasslands and forest complexes. Other plant species of national importance have been recorded in the site, e.g.: Epipactis palustris, Triglochin palustre, Parnassia palustris.

The site is an important locality of the plant species Ligularia sibirica. Within the species distribution range in Slovakia the site is the most eastern locality and as for the abundance of the species population, it is likely the second biggest. The site has been included into the network of protected areas of Slovakia as the Nature Reserve Salvátorské lúky since 1980. It has been listed as a CORINE BIOTOPES site.

Character of the site was considerably influenced by regulation of the local Lipovecký potok (Lipovecký brook) in 1960s when the brook bed was lowered and its banks were fixed. Disturbance of the hydrological regime of the site led to the significant spread of Phragmites australis. Abandonment of traditional land use (hand mowing) has contributed to the change of plant communities structure. Use of small strips of arable land in the surroundings remains as a potential threat for the site (efforts to drain the site, source for spread of field weeds and invasive alien species).
