Asplenium adulterinum

The site is situated on the southern border of Šarišská vrchovina Highland. It is represented by a small hill lying on the northern margin of the village Sedlice near the Rešetka Hill. A serpentine island emerged from the flysch layers of the Inner Carpathian Paleogene in the southern part of the hill. Rare serpentine and azbestos developed to the small fissures. The site and its surroundings have a character of a hilly land. Forests as a result of the succession processes cover almost 80 % of the site. Grasslands and rock communities cover the rest parts of the site. The site lies in the urban and agricultural landscape, where grasslands prevail and they alternate with the arable land and forests. Asplenium cuneifolium – another nationally important species of the genus Asplenium occurs in the site.

In the frame of Slovakia a unique outcrop of serpentines was the base for formation of specific plant communities with the occurrence of annex fern species Asplenium adulterinum. Asplenium adulterinum has the eastern boundary of its distribution range in Slovakia. The site represents the most eastern locality of the species recorded in Slovakia. Part of the site is protected as the Nature Reserve (NR) Dunitová skalka. NR Dunitová skalka was established in 1964.

Abandonment of traditional land use (grazing, hand mowing) has enabled succession processes towards forest communities. Trees shade the rocks with the occurrence of Asplenium species.
