The site is located in the southern part of the Tríbeč mountain range. It is represented by a steep slope with the southern orientation. It is covered with xerophilous grassland vegetation surrounded with the forest stands. It borders with partly cultivated vineyards in the south. Geological basement is formed by limestones, which emerge to surface in places. Soil profile is very shallow.

The aim of protection is to preserve the habitat of xerophilous vegetation with the rich populations of orchids. The whole locality is protected on a national level (Protected Site Kostolianske lúky). Quality and importance: The whole site is protected on a national level (Protected Site Kostolianske lúky). Occurence of several species of the orchids family is significant. One of the biggest populations of hybrid Orchis x dietrichiana in Slovakia occurs in the site.

Grassland communities are threatened by a lack of the traditional management practices (mowing).
